Drivewise Borders is a registered Scottish Charity, dedicated to reducing the number of road accidents through early intervention and education. The charity was founded by former British Touring Car champion, John Cleland and works in partnership with other agencies across the Scottish Borders including the Institute of Advanced Motorists, the Emergency Services and Scottish Borders Council to improve the driving skills of young and more mature drivers across the Scottish Borders.
The over 65's programme provides experienced drivers with an opportunity to refresh their understanding of modern driving theory and enhance their practical driving skills. With the support of Advanced Driving Instructors, confidence issues can be overcome and those bad habits that have developed over the years can be addressed.
The programme takes place over a half day and consists of several presentations on modern driving, changes in legislation and vehicle safety, followed by a practical drive supported by an advanced driving instructor.
Feedback from previous drivers who’ve participated in the scheme has been incredibly positive and the sessions being very well received, with the majority of participants reporting that they felt much safer and more confident when driving as a result of taking part.
